Deciding on a dream
I would like to attend the Paris College Of The Arts to escape the trauma that I have endured in New York. My mother was shot four times in 2001, in front of my door step, from that point on I took on the role of the family’s primary care giver. My great grandmother who I had been living with soon after had two strokes, and my father has been in and out of commas my whole life as a symptom of his sarcoidosis. I have been the head of house hold, and responsible for caring about everyone else neglecting myself. When creating visuals in the past a lot of my inspiratation has derived from these painful experiences. The ballroom scene in New York became an escape from my realaity. Although I was able to transcend my visions to an audience, the competitiveness and “ballroom Shade” made me feel as though my creativity would always be associated with negativity and judgment. I was meet with acceptance and joy when I walked my first ball in paris. I was recruited to house of revlon, my first Parisian house. It was then that I realized I was able to recreate a identenity. Paris is a place that mends fashion fantasies with textile realities. It is where fiction shares a thin line with non fiction and the only thing separating the two may be thread and a sparkle of sequence. In paris, with the language barrier there was no other way to communicate then to tell my story with my fashion and dance. Creating these moments didn’t feel possible in New York. The ability to communicate was a new sence of freedom. I’ve always had problems verbally communicating so visuals granted me the closure to let go . The store fronts of paris created an exhilarating rush, all the mennequines in the windows were dressed in the designers that I had seen on tv and my favorite issues of vogue. Walking the streets Created a joy from with in. I’ve been yearning the opportunity to create more but wanted to be in a space where I was safe to do so. I feel like the Paris College of arts provides that space and I would love to be afforded the opportunity to attend your establishment.
